5 Self Care Practices for Your Mental Health

Self-care is important for everyone. It is especially important for those of us who struggle with mental health issues. When we take the time to practice self care, we are telling our brains that we are worth taking care of. We are sending a message that we want to be healthy and happy, and that is something that our brains desperately need to hear.

Connect with Nature

One of the best things you can do for your mental health is to spend time in nature. There are so many studies that have shown the benefits of spending time outside, and it makes sense when you think about it. We evolved in nature, and our brains are wired to respond to it in a positive way.

Take some time each day to go for a walk, sit in the park, or just spend time outside. You will be amazed at how much better you feel after even a short amount of time in nature.

Make Time for Friends and Family

Another self-care practice that is important for mental health is to make time for friends and family. We are social creatures, and we need to interact with others in order to stay healthy. When we are feeling down, it is often our loved ones that can help us to feel better.

Make an effort to spend time with the people you care about, even if it is just for a short while. You will be glad that you did.

Exercise

Exercise is another self-care practice that is important for mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. It also helps to reduce stress levels and can give you a sense of accomplishment. I often joke with my boudoir clients that I work out hard during the photo sessions especially boudoir sessions, because I walk/move a lot, demonstrate the poses and then climb up and down the ladder to get different angles of shots.

I guess what I am trying to say is that even if you are not the type of person who loves to exercise, it is important to find some form of physical activity that you can stick with. It does not have to be anything strenuous – a simple walk or bike ride will do the trick.

Take Care of Your Body

Another self-care practice that is important for mental health is taking care of your body. When we are physically healthy, it often has a positive effect on our mental health as well.

Make sure to eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and drink plenty of water. These simple things can make a big difference in how we feel mentally and emotionally.

Meditate

If you have never tried meditation before, there are plenty of resources available to get you started. There are many different types of meditation, so you are sure to find one that suits you.

By taking the time to connect with nature, make time for friends and family, exercise, take care of our bodies, and meditate, we can help to improve our mental health and wellbeing.
